Rat Tracks
What Do Rat Tracks Look Like & How to Identify Them.
Tracks left in the dust by (a) Norway Rat and (b) House Mouse
The rat's hind foot track will measure 3/4 to 1 inch, whereas the mouse's hind foot track will measure approximately 3/8 inches or less. Rodents, especially rats, leave "tail drag" marks between their foot tracks.
The travel routes that rodents use between their nests and food/water sources are called runways. Rodents, particularly rats, will often use the same runways and leave dirt and oils from their fur, smudging the surfaces. You can observe these smudge marks on rafters, along ledges, and vertical pipes. They also leave "swing" marks, where the rats have to swing their bodies under obstacles.
