German Cockroach Inspections

The first step to getting rid of German cockroaches is to thoroughly inspect your home for signs of them. View our guide here to check whether you have American or German roaches. These roaches are small, so they can hide in a variety of places. These relatively smaller cockroaches measure roughly 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch in length. Generally, they have a flat, oval-shaped body. One of the most distinctive features of these roaches is that they have two dark stripes behind their head.

German cockroaches are noticeably smaller and lighter in color than American cockroaches.

While nymphs (baby cockroaches) are dark or almost black, fully grown adult German cockroaches are a pale brown color. In addition, even though both male and female roaches have large wings, they surprisingly don't use them to escape. Instead, these roaches prefer to run away quickly when they've been threatened or discovered.

Where To Inspect For German Cockroaches

Now that you've got a pretty vivid image of what these pests look like, it's time to start your inspection. You'll want to be extremely thorough so as not to leave any roaches to continue reproducing. Start by inspecting the following areas:

  • Kitchen (under and behind your sink, stove, microwave, and refrigerator too!)
  • All crevices and cracks (in cabinets and hard to reach places
  • Bathrooms
  • Basements (behind or under just about anything)
  • Switchboxes and electrical outlets
  • Under tables, cafeteria counters, and inside and outside soda fountains
  • Anywhere leftover foods or food scraps might be

Inspecting these places is especially important if you've seen cockroaches or signs of them in your home before. Cockroaches love to inhabit warm, moist environments and can be found near food sources. Sanitation Of Areas Affected By German Cockroaches

The second step to getting rid of German cockroaches is to sanitize the affected areas. This will help remove any pheromones or smells that may be attracting other roaches to the site.

You'll want to start by cleaning all surfaces with a strong cleaner. Be sure to pay special attention to cracks and crevices where roaches like to hide. Once you've cleaned the area, you'll want to apply a residual insecticide or roach baits. This will help keep roaches away for good!

Be sure to clean any sanitize any areas with roach droppings, as their feces can cause disease.

There are a few things you'll want to keep in mind when sanitizing German cockroach-affected areas:

  • Completely remove any trash indoors and outdoors
  • Fix any plumbing leaks or other sources of moisture
  • Keep food in sealed containers or the fridge
  • Clean up spills and crumbs immediately
  • Don't leave dirty dishes out overnight
  • Keep all kitchen appliances well-maintained and free from food scraps and grease
  • Ensure no pet food is lying around or accessible
  • Meticulously vacuum and sweep
  • Dispose of cardboard boxes, soft drinks bottles, and paper bags

You can keep roaches from coming back into your home or business by using highly effective bait such as Avert Dry Flowable bait. Avert is explicitly made to use in cracks and crevices. This bait is a long-term option that works especially great when combined with open-surface gel baits.

Applying German Cockroach Control Product

The third step to getting rid of German cockroaches is to apply recommended roach control products.

You can use a few different types of products, but we recommend using baits and insecticides. Baits work by luring roaches into eating or touching the product and then taking it back to their nests. Insecticides work by killing roaches on contact. We recommend using both baits and insecticides for the best results.

When applying these products, be sure to follow the instructions on the label carefully. You'll want to pay special attention to how often you need to reapply the product and where you should apply it.

The most effective method of quickly eliminating your German cockroach issue is placing quality roach baits alongside insect growth regulators. These include Invict Gold, Tekko IGRS, or Tekko Trio Foam. Some individuals may prefer to use a spray available in our German Roach Spray kit. It includes Advion WDG insecticide and Tekko Pro GIR. To finish up the job, use Stryker 54 to flush out any remaining roaches on the surface you've just sprayed.
