If you use a trap like the Bonide Beetle Bagger it would be recommended to use a repellent insecticide like Bifen IT or Martin's Rescue on plants. Japanese Beetles look for plant food and begin eating plants in June and July. If your plants are sprayed with such repellent insecticides, the beetles are less likely to eat the plants and are encouraged to go the Japanese Beetle Traps. Otherwise without the repellent insecticide in combination with the trap you would draw in more beetles than you trap. The traps may increase the population if used alone without the insecticide. Suggested use would be monthly with Bifen IT or Martin's Rescue. After heavy rains it would be advisable to retreat.

PLACEMENT:
The hanger loop on the top of the vane is used to suspend the trap.
Using a twist-tie, string or wire, hang the trap from a tree, or a
metal or wooden stake, about 3 to 5 feet above the ground. To be
most effective, the trap should be located about 10 feet downwind
of the foliage to intercept beetles heading toward it. Do not place
the trap near or in the foliage as it will attract more beetles into
the foliage.
