Pro Tips
Pro Tips & Quick Tricks

Bora-Care dries clear, so adding a little Alligare Super Marking Dye  (about 1oz per 3 gallons) or Mark It Blue to the mix will make it easy to see where you have already sprayed. For smaller jobs,  Mark It Blue comes in smaller sizes as well as larger sizes. I would mix it in a separate container using hot water and then use a pump sprayer. Make sure you only use dye on the wood so that you don't mind having a blue tint like in a crawl space or attic areas.  Once you mix Bora-Care, use it the same day.
If you have just a small area to cover and do not need to use the whole gallon of Bora-Care, Penashield by Nisus will provide that solution. Bora-Care will cover an average of 500 square feet, and Penashield will cover an average of 200 square feet. Penashield works like Bora-Care to protect wood against wood-destroying insects and organisms.

Product Information

Bora Care Treatment Kills Wood Destroying Insects

Boracare is an insecticide, termiticide and fungicide concentrate used to combat Termites, Powderpost Beetles, Carpenter Ants and Decay Fungi.

Boracare is used as a treatment to untreated wood. Boracare as a termite killer is not applied to the soil, but used as a treatment of cellouse material (wood based material) directly. Boracare may be used for new construction as a termite treatment. Spray the bottom two feet of studs and framework with a compressed air sprayer. Consult label for complete application instructions.

Boracare vs Timbor

BoraCare is in a thick glycol solution; the glycol permits a deeper penetration than other borates such as Timbor. BoraCare will last for the life of the wood, so retreatment is not necessary.

Bora Care Treats Decay Fungi ( Not Mold )

It also has a label against Decay Fungi, but to prevent mold, use the Boracare with Mold-Care.

No Insect Resistance

Boracare with borate salts work by taking advantage of a unique feature in the biology of termites, ants and other insects. If ingested by ants, beetles or termites, the insect becomes unable to extract nutrition from its food and starves to death. And because of this unique mode of action, insects cannot develop a resistance.

Applications and Yield

Bora Care is mixed 1:1 to 5:1 depending on insect and thickness of wood and target pest. See Boracare Dilution Tables for more details.

Yield: One gallon of finished (diluted) product will treat an average of 500 sq feet of wood surface. A handy tool when applying Boracare is to use a tempory marking dye such as Alligare Marking Dye that will help you monitor spray applications (Use just a little).

Where To Treat Bora-Care

Bora-Care may be used in treating cellulosic materials such as wood, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), paper, cardboard, and wood composites. Bora-Care may be used on natural untreated wood. Excellent for pre-construction of decks, fence posts, or any other wood surfaces that make contact with the soil. Provides protection for the life of the wood. Indoor and outdoor use. It's the best insurance you can buy for wood-destroying insects and organisms

New Construction: Bora-Care may be used for new construction as a termite treatment. Spray the bottom two feet of studs and framework with a compressed air sprayer. Consult the label for complete application instructions.

How To Apply Bora-Care

Bora-Care is not labeled for fogging but may be sprayed, brushed, or foamed onto wood surfaces and voids. It needs to be untreated wood for Bora-Care to penetrate.

*Tip: Bora-Care is best mixed with warm or hot water as a pre-mix. Pre-mixing in a bucket will facilitate mixing easier.

What To Expect

Bora-Care dries clear; there is no film left on the wood. For the first couple of days, the wood will appear darker as it waits to dry.

Bora-Care is designed to treat the termites' food source - wood and other cellulosic materials. Bora-Care works by depositing an active ingredient in the wood which will not decompose or vaporize like many other pesticides. This means that it will keep providing broad-spectrum protection with little impact on our environment.

Children and Pets: Wood treated with Bora-Care is non-toxic to humans and animals.

Yield On average, the finished Bora-Care solution covers 500 square feet .

Notes for Powderpost Beetles and Bora-Care Application

  • Powderpost Beetles may have adults emerging from treated wood for up to a year, due to their life cycles.
  • If the wood is too dry (less than 15%), the depth of penetration with the Bora-Care may only occur to the top 1/4 inch. To solve this, spray the wood first with water to increase moisture.
